Santiago, March 15, 2023 – One of the world’s leading experts on disability studies will visit Chile next week. He is Tom Shakespeare, renowned academic and researcher from the United Kingdom, who will give the master class “Disability and Citizenship” during the inauguration of the interdisciplinary research center Núcleo Milenio DISCA.

Shakespeare is director of the International Centre for Evidence in Disability at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK, and is part of the DISCA Millennium Core, as a senior researcher.

He is also one of the authors of the World Report on Disability (2011) developed by WHO, has conducted research in the UK and Africa exploring the social and economic consequences of disability, and is a regular contributor to BBC Radio and The Lancet.

The director of the Millennium Nucleus DISCA, Florencia Herrera Oesterheld, said that Tom Shakespeare’s visit “seeks to open a path of collaboration with Chile, in a field of research little explored, such as disability. For us it is relevant to share with him and strengthen our objective, to be the first center of excellence in disability research in Latin America”.

The master class will be held on Thursday, March 23, at 5:00 p.m., at the Nicanor Parra Library of the Diego Portales University. The activity is open to the community interested in the subject and will have accessibility measures, such as its realization in an accessible place and interpretation in sign language. Those interested in participating can register for free at https://forms.gle/XcL219tB6F7jTG4Y8.

It will also be broadcast on YouTube on the DISCA Millennium Nucleus channel: www.youtube.com/@NucleoDisca.
